Did Social Media Decide U.S. Presidential Election?

A good (and short!) read.

Right from the primaries, the Obama campaign showed how powerful harnessing the Internet and mobile devices could be. Supporters were encouraged to set up their own blogs, download chat and social network avatars, site widgets, and wallpapers, phone bank for the campaign from the privacy of their own homes, and, of course, donate. The campaign’s reach across social networking was enormous in scope, with a presence on every conceivable social network, from Twitter to Facebook, and MySpace to LinkedIn. Even virtual world SecondLife had a concerted effort from the campaign, with news updates piped in from major news sites throughout the campaign. The campaign leveraged mobile as well, with SMS messages to subscribers, mobile apps, and phone calls.

It would be really interesting to see Malaysia’s next elections, and whether our less net-savvy politicians would wake up and realise the need for them to engage with the rakyaton new media.

  2. You know, I bet Obama win at least by another milestone when he’s featured on Oprah.

So yeah, social media has everything to do with anything.

    I believe in advertising.

  3. I must say that he handled his new media campaign expertly. Didn’t do too bad with traditional media either.

If you are interested in Obama’s new media campaign, you might want to read Confession of an Obama Blogger at http://bibchr.blogspot.com/2008/10/confession-of-obama-blogger.html

  4. I think this is where we can really say that the internet is taking over the world :)

  5. I, for one, was following the Obama campaign since he was running for the democratic ticket and his videos on You Tube had such a huge following. He’s got like 2 million plus fans in his Facebook site as well. It’s amazing how as a relative unknown, he managed to raise staggering amounts of money from public financing. He even superseded the Clintons’ popularity. He’s an icon, this man. He’s like a Beatle :P

  6. Prediction was that the FB’s of the world would determine this election. I saw lots of Obama support on my FB but nothing for McCain until Palin came along. Is this a matter of the country fed up with Republican policies or ignoring this huge sector of the population that will soon outnumber the Baby Boomers?

  7. A great article by Seth Godin (whose books I can’t get enough of!), aptly titled “Marketing lessons from the US election”:

TJ, can we do an Integricity Talk on Obama’s victory? I think there is much we can share and learn, and it would be really interesting for both ourselves and our clients.
