Who wants a piece of Facebook?

Have you thrown a sheep at someone lately? Or Super-Poked your friend? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s time for you to check out Facebook, one of the most successful social networking sites out there. The amount of things you can do in Facebook is mindboggling, forget about your Friendster account, Facebook is the way to go! You can write messages on your friend’s ‘wall’, give gifts that will be displayed on their profile, take quizzes and compare your compatibility with your friend, the list just goes on and on, it’s impossible to name them all.

In today’s news, it’s now official, Microsoft has just won the battle against Google to own a stake of Facebook. For a whopping $240 million US, Microsoft now owns…1.6% of Facebook. Yes, you read that correctly, $240 million for 1.6%! That makes the value of Facebook about $15 BILLION, really amazing for a site that is less than 5 years old.

It’s not only used for social purposes, some companies are also learning how to use Facebook to their advantage, mainly in terms of advertising. At the University of Wisconsin, when it was reported that there was a suicidal gunman on the loose, the school took out an advert in Facebook to warn their students.

So, for those that don’t have accounts yet, have I piqued your interest? Quick, go and register for and account, you’ll definitely manage to find some long lost friends there!

  1. Wow.. had no idea that Facebook would be worth that much.

Truthfully, I’m not a fan of Facebook. The only reason I signed up, was because I was “forced” too. My presense there is quite nil that I might have as well not sign up, so as not to take up the space from a genuine user.

however I do agree that the RSVP thing is cool. I do get annoyed with the SuperPoke, and SuperWall and Zombies and whatever else they can think off.

I must be getting too old for this. :p

  2. @Razlin…. Well, it’s always possible to block applications that you dont want.

Hmm.. why facebook is not opening any css custmization options… ?

  3. i think everyone has a different purpose using FB … i personally can’t for the life of me get unto the zombie vampire bandwagon… but it’s a great place to re-connect with pple i’ve lost contact for like 20 years… it’s amazing stuff… in a sense…FB has had a personal touch point with me. That i feel is a success on it’s own.

  5. never have i been so bullied to sign up for the applications!!!

Its not getting too old Razlin, its just, of no purpose i guess. I kawan 4 orang pun susah nak handle inikan dah beratus orang kat facebook. heh.

  6. Syed M Ruhani: Haven’t discovered that, been just clicking on Ignore all these time :p

I discovered 1 useful application in Facebook – The Grey’s Anatomy Trivia! I just so love it. Not only I get to quiz myself on my knowledge of GA (tsk tsk) but I kinda get to figure out what’s happening in future episodes (since the Qs come from season 4 episodes too!)

Eugene Lim: You’re right.. it’s easier to stumble upon long lost friends here, since most use their real names.. and not some nickname!

Ikram: agreed.. it’s hard to handle all those people.. but i like when you wanna add someone, and you chose the option “I don’t know him/her” or something like that, Facebook asks back.. why do you want to add this person then? I thought that was funny.. Jek thought the same too (not it being funny, but why would I wanna add someone who I don’t know).
